Pick-IT - Exact Remote Forms (ERF) client

Pick-IT

Introduction

Exact Remote Forms (ERF) was introduced in Pick-IT ASP with Product Update 397 and offers many benefits as client software on the hand terminal, compared to Internet Explorer. ERF is a stand-alone application which can be automatically installed on mobile devices to improve presentation and performance of Pick-IT. ERF is available for hand terminal and Windows PC.  Although ERF is recommended, Internet Explorer can still be used for Pick-IT ASP.

Usage of ERF eliminates two major limitations in using Pocket Internet Explorer as client software: slow scanning speed on some scanner models, and button pictures could not be shown on Windows Mobile.

Description

Requirements

  1. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 is required to use ERF.
  2. ERF requirements for mobile devices: Windows CE 5 or higher, or Windows Mobile 6 or higher.
ERF has been seen working also on Windows CE 4, but this can not be guaranteed in all situations.
  3. ERF requirements for Windows PC's:  Windows XP or higher (where .NET Framework 3.5 can be installed)
  4. When installed on PC: 'change' rights on the folder where ERF is installed (default: "c:\program files\exact\remote forms client")
  5. ERF does not support using alternate HTTP ports, for example "http://ourserver:81/pickit", while Internet Explorer would support this.

ERF does not need to be re-installed with each Pick-IT update.
When ERF is used as client, the IIS-server is still used as host.

Installation on hand terminal

When ERF is not installed on the mobile device yet, browse to your Pick-IT site but add "/remoteforms" to the URL. For example: when you normally would start Pick-IT in Internet Explorer with http://iisserver/pickit use now http://iisserver/pickit/remoteforms instead. You will see this page:

On Mobile devices, you may need to scroll to see the desired install option. If .NET 3.5 is not installed yet, first install 'Framework setup' and after that 'Messages setup' for your platform. Please refer to Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 information if you need to install .NET 3.5 manually. It may be necessary to choose the download Save option instead of the Open option, because .NET35 will not always install from the Internet Explorer temporary folder. In that case, save the CAB files to a location where you can find them again (like in the root \ of the device, or in the cold boot folder) and start the CAB file after download by browsing to it with the File Explorer and doube-clicking on the downloaded file. It may also be necessary to allow temporarily for more storage space on the device (Windows CE menu: Start/Control Panel/System/tab Memory, move the slide to allow for some more storage space). Not too much, otherwise programs will not run at all.

When .NET Framework 3.5 is installed, you can install ERF from the same URL : http://iisserver/pickit/remoteforms

Scroll down until you see 'Client Setup' for your platform and click on this link. The file ERFC.CAB will now be  downloaded and installed:   When done, following page will show again. You can close Internet Explorer now (F11 switches between full screen and normal view in IE)   ERF can now be started from Start / Programs / Exact Remote Forms

When starting for the first time, the
basic Pick-IT URL has to be entered
press 'Connect' after entering the URL (for example http://iisserver/pickit)   now Pick-IT is activated, as with
Internet Explorer (only looking better)
ERF will look better if you auto-hide the Windows task bar:

Installation on PC

ERF can also be used on your own PC desktop. The PC ERF installer is located in the IIS 'remoteforms' folder for Pick-IT, for example C:\Pickitmobile\RemoteForms. If ERF was installed before, it needs to be uninstalled first through the Windows Control Panel. Please note that ERF does not need to be re-installed with every Pick-IT update.

The installation can be started by browsing in Internet Explorer to the Pick-IT URL followed by '/remoteforms', for example http://IISserver/pickit/remoteforms. This page will now show:

Choose Client setup at platform Windows PC. Choose 'Execute' in de pop-up window and just click Next on all screens, you can change the target installation folder. After installation, a screen 'Installation complete' will show. Press 'Close'. ERF can now be started in Start/Exact Remote Forms.

ERF Usage

After starting ERF for the first time, the Pick-IT URL has to be entered. This is the same URL as you would use in Internet Explorer, for example http://IISserver/pickit.

In the desktop version, you can choose the resolution you would like to use. The default resolution 240x320 is the resolution commonly used on hand terminals.
Press Connect.

Now the Pick-IT login page will show as in Internet Explorer, only with another 'look'. Login with the hand terminal user login and press Enter or click the V button.

Now you can use Pick-IT as you are used to.

Scrolling

ERF solved the problem of limited space on a mobile device screen by making the panes which do no fit 'drag able'.
When information does not fit in a specific pane, this will be indicated in ERF by small arrow indicators:

These indicators mean that the screen can be dragged or zoomed out. Just put your finger or stylus on the pane and drag it left or up.

Now an indicator shows where you are in the current screen. This indicator only shows while you are dragging the pane.

Zooming

By double-tapping or double-clicking on a pane with scroll indicators, the screen is zoomed out to fit, or zoomed in to original size again when tapping again.
Note: when zooming out on a mobile device the result may vary due to the limited resolution.

This is especially useful when viewing the picture of an item in Pick-IT Extra Item Details. Click on an item link anywhere in Pick-IT. When the picture shows (which is fit to the screen) you can double-click the picture to zoom in. Now you can drag the picture to view a specific part.

Menu hotkeys

When a Pick-IT menu is started on a mobile device, the digit before the menu can be pressed to start the menu. However, this only works on a mobile device and not in ERF on your PC.
